How the calculation works

Chronological age for standardized testing is computed by subtracting the date of birth from the test date, column by column — days first, then months, then years — with borrowing:

  • If the day of the test date is smaller than the day of birth, borrow one month and add 30 days (the testing convention treats every borrowed month as 30 days, regardless of the actual calendar month).
  • If the month becomes negative, borrow one year and add 12 months.
  • The result is expressed as years;months;days and is truncated, never rounded.

Test convention vs calendar-exact age

Because the testing convention assumes 30-day months when borrowing, it can differ slightly from the true calendar difference (which accounts for 28-, 29-, and 31-day months). This calculator shows both so you can see when they diverge. For scoring standardized assessments, use the test convention unless your manual states otherwise. For legal, medical, or administrative purposes, the calendar-exact age is generally the appropriate figure.
